Nearly 200 years ago, the Sun pitcher plant nutans (Heliamphora nutans) was discovered in eastern Venezuela. Heliamphora nutans was the first species in this striking group to be scientifically described as a carnivorous plant. This sun pitcher plant attracts prey by luring insects to the rim of its pitchers. There, they are caught by the smooth rim of the pitcher of this Heliamphora nutans. The sun pitcher plant has striking white, bell-shaped flowers that sometimes have a light purple hue. Heliamphora nutans occurs naturally on several tabletop mountains at the tri-border point of Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela. The rugged and nutrient-poor area has led the plant to seek nourishment in a unique way. With its pitcher-shaped leaves, Heliamphora nutans captures numerous insects that cannot climb out due to the smooth interior. The flower petals of this sun pitcher plant taper to a point and are undulating, giving the flower a bell-like shape. In the center of the flower, there is a yellow bundle of stamens.
The Sun pitcher plant nutans (Heliamphora nutans), is a true botancial species of carnivorous plant. It is known to be a somewhat more challenging species to care for. However, if you take care of some basic conditions, Heliamphora nutans should not pose significant problems. The most essential requirement is very high humidity, around 80-90%. Therefore, it is necessary to keep the species in a terrarium or greenhouse. The temperature, on the other hand, can vary considerably. It can range between 20°C and 32°C, but ideally, it should be around 26°C. For substrate, you can mix live or dead sphagnum moss with peat and perlite. We offer this in our plant accessories section. Ensure that this mixture does not have the chance to dry out by watering it three times a week with rainwater or other mineral-rich water. Place Heliamphora nutans, or the sun pitcher plant, in a very bright location for optimal growth and vitality.
