The Selaginella willdenowii grows naturally on nutrient-rich forest floors in tropical rainforests. Not much light reaches this soil due to the thick rainforest canopy. However, strong sunlight can penetrate, allowing the Selaginella to thrive. Selaginella willdenowii had to develop this iridescent trick on its leaves. The leaf's unique structure deflects harmful sunlight. The Selaginella willdenowii can be kept both indoors and outdoors. In either case, make sure this fern doesn't get too much light and doesn't overwater . For more information about this Araflora plant, see the plant information below.
The Selaginella willdenowii requires an evenly moist but airy environment. The soil should never dry out completely, but keeping it constantly wet quickly leads to root rot. Preferably use rainwater or decalcified water and mist the plant regularly to maintain high humidity. A partial shade location is ideal: bright or direct sunlight damages the blue, iridescent leaf structure and can cause leaf burn. The temperature should remain stable between 18 and 24°C, and drafts or cold snaps should be avoided. During the growing season, add a very light dose of houseplant food once a month; too much food damages the root system and reduces the color intensity. Repotting is best done in spring, in an airy mix of peat, coco coir, and perlite so that excess water can drain away. If these conditions are maintained, the Selaginella willdenowii has a spectacular color and grows densely and healthily.
