Rhaphidophora pertusa is mostly grown for its leaves. This species is a half epiphytic plant that produces aerial roots from its rhizome to anchor itself to trees for structural support. The leaves of this plant are oval, heart shaped and like many other species from this genus, the leaf edge is deeply cut. Also, the mature leaves with a maximum length of about 50 cm could show fenestrations. This plant produces inflorescences seldomly. When in bloom, the non-spectacular inflorescence is similar to other species from the aroid family. This plant could be propagated by cuttings. Make sure every piece of cut rhizome contains at least three leaves and some aerial roots. Put cutting in specialized propagation soil or place them in water to root first.
Rhaphidophora pertusa originates from the warm and humid forests of southeast Asia. Hence, this plant requires an environment with a temperature range between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius. For optimal growing conditions, do not let humidity drop under 70 %. This species is mainly suitable for warmer rooms indoors or heated greenhouses. As this species matures, provide structural items like a moss pole to guide its climbing growth habit. The plant thrives in bright indirect light, try to avoid direct sunlight in summer and spring as it will scorch its leaves. Place this plant in humus rich potting soil and never let the soil go dry. Also, prevent the soil from becoming swampy. Fertilize the plant with fertilizer for green plants, half the recommended dose. Withhold fertilizer in autumn and winter.
