Plant information: Rhaphidophora hongkongensis

Rhaphidophora hongkongensis is mostly grown for its leaves. This species is a half epiphytic plant that produces aerial roots from its rhizome to anchor itself to trees for structural support. The leaves of this plant are round to oval and unlike many other species from this genus, the leave edge is not deeply cut. The leaves of older plants are arranged in a particular shingled pattern hugging a surface when grown in a natural way. This plant produces inflorescences seldomly. When in bloom, the non-spectacular inflorescence is similar to other species from the aroid family. This plant could be propagated by cuttings. Make sure every piece of cut rhizome contains at least three leaves and some aerial roots. Put cutting in specialized propagation soil or place them in water to root first.

Plant care: Rhaphidophora hongkongensis

Rhaphidophora hongkongensis originates from the subtropical, humid forests of southeast Asia. Hence, this plant requires an environment with a temperature range between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. For optimal growing conditions, do not let humidity drop under 70 %. This species is mainly suitable for rooms indoors or temperate greenhouses. As this species matures, provide structural items to guide its climbing growth habit, preferably a flat surface to enhance its shingling habit. The plant thrives in bright indirect light, try to avoid direct sunlight in summer and spring as it will scorch its leaves. It also accepts more shaded conditions. Place this plant in humus rich potting soil and never let the soil go bone dry. Also, prevent the soil of becoming swampy. Fertilize the plant with fertilizer for green plants, half the recommended dose. Withhold fertilizer in autumn and winter.
