Pilea hitchcockii is native to Central Ecuador, where it grows in mossy mountain forests. The young leaves of this species are strongly serrated. As the leaves grow, these serrations gradually disappear. The flowers of Pilea hitchcockii are relatively inconspicuous. They grow at the top of the leaves and are almost the same color as the leaves themselves. But this one is just as beautifully colored, with a mix of silver, dark purple, and red. Pilea hitchcockii is a species with few needs. You can grow this terrarium plant into a success with little effort. Provide a spot with at least a few hours of sun and shade each day. Too much sunlight or bright artificial light can cause the plant to dry out. The temperature should ideally be around 22°C (72°F) to ensure good growth. Do not allow it to drop below 10°C (50°F) or above 30°C (86°F). Give Pilea hitchcockii water about twice a week to keep the soil slightly moist. Always use rainwater or distilled water.
