Philodendron lupinum is a hemi epiphytic plant that grows best in heated rooms and greenhouses. This plant originates from the (sub)tropical regions of Brazil. This plant begins its live as an epiphyte, where it sprouts in structural positions in the canopy of trees. When reaching maturity, the plant directs its roots to the ground and becomes a so called hemiepiphytic (half- epiphyte). When mature, the leaves of the plant changes in shape and size, up to a length of 50 cm. As a young plant the leaves are heart shaped and have a maroon backside. Inflorescences are rarely formed and not so impressive. This plant is mostly propagated by rhizome cuttings that form roots in specialized cutting soil or water.
Philodendron lupinum originates from subtropical and humid forests of Brazil. Make sure that temperatures always stay between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius. Also try to maintain humidity above 70 percent for optimal growth. Let the soil of Philodendron lupinum never dry out completely but prevent soggy conditions. Especially with young plants provide a fast draining and airy soil, specialized orchid mixes or soil for Anthuriums are good options. When this plant is not structurally supported, it develops a hanging growing habit. This plant manages well in shade conditions, but some bright indirect light stimulates more vigorous growth. Try to avoid direct sunlight or that will leave burn marks the leaves. Fertilize the plant with half the recommended strength of fertilizer for green plants in spring and summer.
