Plant information: Philodendron geniculatum 'Jet Streak'

Philodendron geniculatum “Jet Streak” originates from the humid tropical forests of the Nariño department in Colombia, on the western slopes of the Andes. In this natural habitat, this aroid probably grows as a low hemiepiphyte or terrestrial plant among moss-rich, shady undergrowth. The species was only recently scientifically described, despite the fact that Philodendron geniculatum “Jet Streak” has been cultivated for decades in the United States, Europe and parts of Asia. Characteristic of this ariod are its elliptical leaves with a thick, whitish midrib, numerous parallel lateral veins and a striking ear-shaped leaf base. Philodendron geniculatum is described as a species new to science and illustrated. This species has been cultivated for decades in the US, Europe and Asia (Taiwan), but until recently had not yet flowered. It is characterised by a striking bend at the top of the lower leaf stalk, an elliptical leaf with a thick, whitish midrib, many parallel primary veins on each side, an ear-shaped base and a pointed tip, as well as persistent red cataphylls that quickly dry brown and later become fibrous. P. geniculatum has a single inflorescence with a striking bract, burgundy red on the outside in the lower part and intense red in the upper part. Morphologically, the species is most closely related to and probably related to P. scherberichii, from which we distinguish it. Plant care: Philodendron geniculatum 'Jet Streak'

Philodendron geniculatum “Jet Streak” likes bright, filtered light or partial shade. Direct sunlight, especially in summer, can cause leaf burn. This plant grows best in warm temperatures and higher humidity, similar to its tropical origins. Keep the potting soil of Philodendron geniculatum “Jet Streak” evenly moist, but do not allow the roots to stand in wet soil. Allow the top 2-3 cm of the substrate to dry out slightly before watering again. An airy, coarse and well-drained mix helps prevent root rot. With proper care, this ariod will develop into a strong and decorative houseplant that will retain its exclusive appearance for a long time. The symbols below provide additional care information about this special Ariod.Temperature: Thrives at an indoor temperature of 18-26 °C. Do not allow the temperature to fall below 15 °C. Protect from cold draughts and hot, dry air, especially in winter. Water: Keep the potting medium evenly moist, but not soggy. Allow the top 2-3 cm to dry out slightly before watering again. Use a well-drained, coarse potting soil to prevent root rot. Light: Prefers partial shade or bright filtered light. Avoid direct exposure to the sun, especially in summer, as this can cause leaf burn. Too little light can reduce leaf size and vigour. Humidity: Requires medium to high humidity, ideally 60-80%. The plant does best in rooms with extra humidity (e.g. with a humidifier) or in a well-ventilated terrarium-like environment if kept compact.
