The petioles of Philodendron applanatum are uniquely shaped, they are completely flat! These weirdly looking petioles hold up trilobed leaves, the leaves can become fairly large in size, they can grow up to 20cm or even 40cm in length. In this way Philodendron applanatum will create a nice and bright green foliage. The leaves are coloured bright green and have clearly visible veining, around the veining some leaves will have a soft yellow glow. Philodendron applanatum is a really rare Philodenron, you have to strike it lucky to find this plant for sale somewhere. Philodendron applanatum is native to the tropics of Peru. Araflora advises to place Philodendron applanatum at a spot out of reach from little children and pets, since the plant is toxic when ingested.
Philodendron applanatum prefers to be placed in a spot with bright but indirect sunlight, full sunlight exposure can discolour or even scorch its leaves. When the leaves start to droop and become yellow it is a probably an indication that the plant is receiving too much light. The plant likes the temperature to be above 15 degrees Celsius, when it drops below 15 degrees Celsius it will suffer from chilling damage. Araflora provides Philodendron applanatum with a well-draining soil with an pH between 5.0 to 6.0. This Philodendron doesn’t require much water, but keep the soil slightly moist and avoid giving it wet feet since this will cause root rot. The plant is also sensitive to overwatering, when the leaves become brownish it means it is probably receiving too much water. Philodendron applanatum is a tropical plant so it likes a higher humidity, in fact it likes the humidity level to be around 70%, so misting the plant on a regular basis is recommended. Philodendron applanatum is not a fast grower in order to support its growth Araflora advises to fertilize it bi-weekly during the growing season (spring and summer) with some regular well-balanced houseplant fertilizer that needs to be diluted to half of the recommended dosage.
