Stenoglottis woodii - Orchid451
The orchid Stenoglottis woodii, also called Stenoglottis macloughlinii, is indigenous to the coast of southern Africa. The usual growing place of this species is not on trees and shrubs as is the case with many other orchids, but on the ground. Stenoglottis woodii has beautiful small white flowers that protrude above the dense foliage on long flower stems. Per plant, dozens of these flowers can flower simultaneously.

Stenoglottis woodii occurs naturally in the temperate climate of South Africa and Zimbabwe. The plant has a fairly dense cover of green spoon-shaped leaves. A few 20 cm long stems protrude from this foliage. There are more than 25 flowers per flower stem on a medium to large plant. The flowers are mostly white and have a relatively large lip. Several purple dots can be found on this lip, which gives Stenoglottis woodii its beautiful tone.
Stenoglottis woodii grows best at warm temperatures of around 22⁰C. It’s better to keep the temperature between 15⁰C and 30⁰C. A humidity of around 80% is needed for good growth of the Stenoglottis woodii. The orchid must be placed in a light place, avoid direct sunlight. Water less in the winter and keep it in a cooler place. Make sure that the soil does dry out completely even during this period. For this you can use rain or distilled water to prevent mineral build-up. This will amount to two or three times a week. Sufficient air circulation is important to prevent diseases and infections. A mix of coarse sand and peat forms a suitable substrate. You can find this and other growing necessities in our "plant accessories" section. Ensure that water cannot remain in the pot. When the flowers of Stenoglottis woodii have finished flowering, you can cut them away.
