Scaphosepalum verrucosum grows in Guyana, Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador at altitudes between 1.300 and 3.500 meters. The orchid blossoms with yellow flowers with brown stripes. The column is also brown. The flower develops closed, opening up later. This keeps it quite compact. The flower stems of Scaphosepalum verrucosum carries around 5 flowers and with its 15 centimetre it is bigger than the round leaves.
Because Scaphosepalum verrucosum is found in mountainous regions it needs slightly lower temperatures. During the day it needs between 18⁰C and 22⁰C and in during the night this may drop to 12⁰C. Temperatures below 5⁰C or above 25⁰C can prove to be too much for this orchid. This orchid doesn't need a lot of light and should always be kept out of direct sunlight, to prevent it from drying out. The humidity of its surroundings should be 80% and slightly higher during the night. Water it with plenty of rainwater or distilled water during its blossoming and less in its period of rest. Proper airflow combined with a proper humidity will help prevent infections and disease. Scaphosepalum verrucosum can be kept in a pot with shredded bark, or attached to a piece of bark with moss. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. Fertilize when needed. Old flowers can be cut from the plant.
