Pescatorea dayana is found in Ecuador, Colombia and Panama growing at altitudes up to 1.500 meters. This orchid is an epiphyte, which means it grows upon other plants and trees. The flower of Pescatorea dayana is white and has pink ends on its petals. In its centre there is a thicker part which has a dark pink colour. At 7,5 centimetre these fragrant flowers are quite large and remain attached to the plant for quite a long time.
The natural habitat of Pescatorea dayana is quite cold, which means this species can handle colder temperatures. During the day 20⁰C is ideal and at night this may drop to 12⁰C. Temperatures below 5⁰C or above 25⁰C can be too much for this orchid to handle. This orchid doesn't need much light and should always be kept out of direct sunlight, to prevent it from drying out. The preferred humidity for Pescatorea dayana is quite high and should be above 80%, raising it even more during the night. Give plenty of rainwater or distilled water while it is blossoming and less in its period of rest. A proper airflow is important to prevent infections and disease. Pescatorea dayana can be kept in a pot or basket with orchid-mix, or attached to a piece of bark with moss. If you attach it to a piece of bark, be sure to spray it regularly with water. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. You can fertilize every now and then. Old flowers can be cut from the plant.
