Muscarella macroblepharis - Orchid320
Muscarella macroblepharis - Orchid320
Macroblepharis is Greek for 'large eyelashes'. This is the perfect description for this orchid. The flowers have elongated light yellow ends, closely resembling eyelashes. The flowers of Muscarella macroblepharis are dark purple. Just like the rest of the plant they are small, making it suitable to keep in a small terrarium. This should be a cool place, as this orchid's natural habitat is on the grassy plains of the Andes.

The shape and colour of Muscarella macroblepharis varies, but in general it's off-white with a purple or pink spotty or stripy pattern. The flower grows on a stem of 15 centimetre. The leaves can be egg shaped or more spoon shaped and usually don't get larger than 8 centimetre. In nature Muscarella macroblepharis is found on altitudes of 1.600 to 2.350 meters in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.
Muscarella macroblepharis grows best at a temperature around 20⁰C. Don't let the temperature drop below 5⁰C or rise above 25⁰C. A humidity around 80% will stimulate the growth of Muscarella macroblepharis. The orchid should be kept in a semi-light spot, but our of direct sunlight. During winter the plant should get slightly more light and less water. The orchid can't store water, so don't allow the soil to dry completely. Water the plant using rainwater or distilled water to prevent the accumulation of minerals. In practice this will be watering three to five times a week. Proper airflow combined with a proper humidity will help prevent infections and disease. Orchid-mix will be a suitable substrate. You can also attach the plant to a piece of bark. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. Make sure moisture is able to drain from it. Old flowers can be cut from the plant.
