Masdevallia attenuata is a plant from the orchid family. This sympodial species does not produce pseudobulbs. Instead, several elongated spoon shaped leaves are formed in a cluster. The plant flowers from early winter till the end of spring. The inflorescence is short, carrying only one waxy flower. The tubular flowers are white, with a light green center. In some cases, some varieties could show purple striations inside the center of the flower. The ends of the outer tepals are pointy, and colored bright yellow. Flowers disperse a pleasant smell. Propagating this orchid is easiest by division. Make sure that every part contains at least five mature leaves. Naturally, Masdevallia attenuata grows as an epiphyte on mossy branches of trees. They grow in mountainous areas between 300- and 2400-meters altitude. This species grows best in cool conditions, but it handles warmer temperatures up to 27 degrees Celsius as well. Always provide high humidity and excellent air flow. Situate this plant at a shady spot, without direct sunlight. Use an airy substrate mix for epiphytes that holds lots of moisture. The use of sphagnum moss is recommended.
