Laelia anceps is a medium to large sized species from the orchid family. The pseudobulbs of this species are sharp-edged, oval and elongated. Every pseudobulb carries one and in some rare cases two leathery, sturdy leaves. From the end of summer to autumn this orchid could produce flower stalks. Every flower stalk contains 2 to several pink to purple, vanilla scented flowers that grow to a maximum length or 12 centimeters. Every long-lasting flower shows a dark purple labellum with a yellow interior. Propagation is mostly done by division. Make sure that every division has at least three mature and healthy pseudobulbs.
Laelia anceps originates from Central America where it grows at elevations of between 500 and 2400 meters. It is an epiphytic species that grows on branches of trees in subtropical forests or tree plantations. For optimal care, provide this orchid with a warm environment, for example, bright rooms indoors or warm greenhouses. This species could handle temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius but is not considered optimal. Place this plant in an excellent draining and coarse medium for epiphytes. Allow the medium to go dry before the next watering. This species goes dormant in winter, water sparsely when this is the case. Provide Laelia anceps with bright direct sunlight for a couple hours a day at least or strong artificial lights. Insufficient light will cause poor flowering. Fertilize this species with orchid fertilizer in the growing season with the recommended strength.
