Dendrobium ovatum is a rare orchid from Southwestern India which grows from sea level to around 1500 meters altitude. This species forms long, hanging, cane-shaped pseudobulbs that lose its leaves in the rest period. The leathery leaves are alternating, oval shaped. Flowers are formed at the end of the leafless canes in fall. From an up to 15-centimeter-long inflorescence, multiple flowers could form. Flowers are green from the center that fade into a bright white towards the flower's edge. The flower could reach a maximum size of around two centimeters. When this species grows larger and slightly impractical, the plant could be divided into smaller plants. Be sure to have at least three healthy mature pseudobulbs per plantlet.
Dendrobium ovatum grows on top of branches of trees in tropical forests that knows a strict drought period. For this warm to hot growing species, provide day temperatures between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius. At nighttime a temperature drop stimulates growth. Ideally, humidity is higher than 60% in its growing environment, a higher humidity encourages forming of new plant parts. Allow for optimal ventilation. The ideal potting media is a very airy mix for epiphytes and could consist of large sized bark. Place this plant in bright indirect light. Water this species regularly in the growing season which lasts normally from summer till fall. It is possible to let the medium dry out almost completely in between waterings in winter and store it in a cooler place. The plant loses its leaves and goes dormant, to produce new growths in spring. Fertilize this species weekly with a recommended dosage of specialized orchid fertilizer.
