Coelogyne fimbriata was collected in China by J. Damper Parks who was a botanist working for the RHS and was described by Lindley in 1824. It is an epiphytic orchid that grows in forests along streams, from the subtropical Himalayan region to Vietnam in the east and Malaysia to the south, on 650-1400 m altitude. Plants have a long, slender rhizome with many wiry roots along which are the almost spherical pseudobulbs. They are about 1-3 cm in diameter and have 2 stiff leaves on top, each 7-9 cm long and 1-1.5 cm wide. Flower stems appear from the top of the pseudobulb are short and have one flower open at a time. Flowering occurs in summer to autumn. Coelogyne fimbriata flowers are light yellow in colour, about 3.5 cm in diameter, with a cream – ivory green lip with darker spot and hairy edges. This orchid is very similar and often confused with Coelogyne ovalis which has smooth lip edges. Coelogyne fimbriata is an easy plant to grow, provided a small dry rest is given in winter. It is adaptable orchid for both terrarium and home culture, and being a compact grower can fit in all collections. Coelogyne fimbriata occurs naturally in subtropical forests of southeast Asia at elevations of 500-1500 m. It is a seasonal grower, requiring a short winter rest time with restricted watering. After the new growths are completed in autumn, water only when it is totally dry and keep at about 15-20 C at day and 13-15 C at night. As new leaves start growing, you can slightly increase watering frequency. It will also need higher day temperatures that can reach 25 C. Coelogyne fimbriata likes bright shade, without any direct sunlight. Planting on cork with a good layer of sphagnum is perfect for this orchid, and this way it can grow in terraria. Pot or basket culture is also good for this plant using small bark or a bark and sphagnum mix. Fertilizing every 15 days with a high nitrogen water soluble fertilizer diluted in half the normal concentration during the growing season (mainly mid-spring and summer) is highly beneficial.
