Cleisostoma arietinum - Orchid32a
Cleisostoma arietinum - Orchid32a
This 'miniature' orchid is perfect for your terrarium! Because Cleisostoma arietinum grows upon rocks and trees in nature, it is also possible to attach it to a shelf any object at home. Besides Cleisostoma arietinum not taking up much space, it's also a sight to behold. This orchid produces whitish purple flowers of no more than 6 millimetre. These spring from an odd looking stalk with fleshy, needle shaped leaves.

Cleisostoma arietinum is found in nature in India, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. This variety is epiphytic, meaning it grows upon other plants. The orchid doesn't get much bigger than 10 centimetre and produces relatively small flowers of 6 millimetre. The colour of Cleisostoma arietinum can vary from whitish pink to whitish purple. Parts of the flower are even so small that they are slightly transparent. The leaves of the stalk are hardly distinguishable and grow on both sides of the stalk.
Cleisostoma arietinum can be grown using artificial light, but make sure your terrarium lamp is at a distance of at least 10 centimetre from your plant. If you don't use artificial light, make sure the orchid is in a light place, but avoiding direct sunlight. The humidity of its environment should be quite high; around 80%. The ideal temperature for Cleisostoma arietinum is around 25⁰C and shouldn't get below 15⁰C or above 30⁰C. Water the plant by spraying it if you have it attached to a surface. This should be done three to five times a week, using rainwater or distilled water. You should water it when the substrate has dried slightly. A proper airflow, together with the right humidity will help prevent infections and disease. If you want to keep Cleisostoma arietinum in a pot, using orchid-mix will be suitable. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. This orchid doesn't need any or only a little fertilizing. Old flowers can be cut from the plant.
