Calanthe vestita var. rubra is found in Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. In contrast to the white lip of the 'standard' variety, this variation has a pink color, making this orchid extra attractive and popular. The orchid has a thicker leaf base from which long leaves emerge. A 90 cm flower stem with +/- 10 flowers extends from the base. The flowers are hidden under light green bract at the beginning of their development. This gives the end of the flower stem a distinct appearance.
Calanthe vestita var. rubra likes a lot of light, but not direct sunlight, and good air circulation. The optimum temperature for Calanthe vestita var. rubra is around 25⁰C.The humidity should be around 80%. A small increase in humidity at night promotes the production of flowers. Give Calanthe vestita var. rubra rain or distilled water when the roots have dried slightly, reduce amount of water when the plant blooms. Water should be able to drain easily from the bottom. You can use orchid mix as a substrate. You can find these and other growing supplies under our 'Plant accessories' section. Fertilize the orchid in the spring and summer to give the bulb a good chance to grow. Then taper off in the fall until the leaves begin to fall. In winter, the orchid goes into a resting phase. It will then lose its leaves, and grow inflorescence. You can cut dead flowers from the plant.
