Barkeria whartoniana is an elegant, climbing orchid that can reach a length of approximately 70 cm. This orchid has thickened, greyish-white stems that are slightly compressed laterally and become covered with dry, papery bracts as they age. Barkeria whartoniana forms 4 to 7 sword-shaped to narrow egg-shaped, leathery leaves that only appear on new shoots and can fall off during the dormant period. The inflorescence of Barkeria whartoniana is terminal and upright, with several flowers per stem. The flowers are approximately 2 to 3.5 cm in diameter and are odourless but very attractive. The colour varies from soft pink to intense lilac. A characteristic feature is the free-standing column that is not pressed against the lip, which distinguishes this species from related species such as Barkeria melanocaulon and Barkeria fritz-halbingeriana. The lip has bright yellow ribs with subtle purple stripes at the top, which gives the flower extra decorative value. Barkeria whartoniana is a light-loving orchid that grows best in bright, indirect sunlight or filtered sun. This orchid requires warm temperatures and good air circulation. During the active growth period in spring and summer, Barkeria whartoniana needs regular watering, allowing the substrate to dry out thoroughly in between waterings. After flowering, there is a clear resting period. During this phase, Barkeria whartoniana may lose its leaves and watering should be greatly reduced. An airy and very well-draining substrate is essential; this orchid can be grown either mounted on cork or in a pot with coarse bark. With the right balance of light, heat, and a drier dormant period, Barkeria whartoniana will bloom profusely every year and become a valuable addition to any orchid collection.
