Angraecum leonis was discovered by nurseryman León Humbolt and named after him by Reichenbach f. at the end of the 19th century as ‘Aeranthes leonis’. It occurs naturally in Madagascar and the Comoros as an epiphyte in humid forests and occasionally as a lithophyte near streams, on altitudes up to 1500 m. These orchids have 4-6 bright green, leathery leaves that are shaped like a sickle (without real top and bottom surfaces) and can be 10-20 cm long and up to 2-3 cm wide. Roots are thin and silvery. Flower stems have 1-4 fragrant flowers that open green and then turn white, 8-12 cm in diameter with a 7-9 cm long spur. Flowering occurs autumn to spring. Angraecum leonis is well suited for a humid terrarium mounted on a piece of cork, or a pot with small sized bark. The unique leaves and long-lasting distinctive flowers make it a striking addition to any collection. Angraecum leonis occurs naturally in humid forests of Madagascar and the Comoros, at elevations up to 1500 m. It is an orchid that likes warm conditions all year, around 21-25 C at day and 18-20 C at night. Grow in bright shade without any direct sunlight. This orchid should not be left to dry out between waterings since the long thin roots can desiccate quite quickly. Angraecum leonis can grow easily mounted on cork in a terrarium provided it is big enough since plants can get heavy. Pots filled with small sized bark can be also used since this is an adaptable orchid. Fertilizing every 15 days with a high nitrogen water soluble fertilizer diluted in half the normal concentration during the growing season (mainly mid-spring and summer) is highly beneficial. The Araflora plantcare symbols below will give you an indication about the Angraecum leonis.
