Angraecum leonis was discovered by nurseryman León Humbolt and named after him by Reichenbach f. at the end of the 19th century as ‘Aeranthes leonis’. It occurs naturally in Madagascar and the Comoros as an epiphyte in humid forests and occasionally as a lithophyte near streams, on altitudes up to 1500 m. These orchids have 4-6 bright green, leathery leaves that are shaped like a sickle (without real top and bottom surfaces) and can be 10-20 cm long and up to 2-3 cm wide. Roots are thin and silvery. Flower stems have 1-4 fragrant flowers that open green and then turn white, 8-12 cm in diameter with a 7-9 cm long spur. Flowering occurs autumn to spring. Angraecum leonis is well suited for a humid terrarium mounted on a piece of cork, or a pot with small sized bark. Angraecum leonis occurs naturally in humid forests of Madagascar and the Comoros, at elevations up to 1500 m.
