Angraecum compactum is a monopodial orchid with leathery leaves. The subsequential, thick leaves develop into a stem-like structure with older specimens. The color of the folded leaves is a deep grayish green. From the end of winter until the beginning of summer, this orchid could produce multiple flowers. Per inflorescence it is possible to notice one to three flowers, with a maximum length of 6 cm. The bright white flowers disperse a pleasant fresh citrus scent at night. Together with the long spur, it is an indication of pollination by moths. Propagating this orchid is challenging; and could be done by keiki’s or seeds.
Angraecum compactum originates from Madagascar. It thrives on the mossy branches of trees in high humid forests. This orchid is suitable for growth in greenhouses, terraria or with some extra care, indoors. For optimal growth, provide temperatures between 16 and 25 degrees Celsius in daytime. At night, temperatures should drop about five degrees. Ensure that humidity is always 70% or above and place it in a room with good ventilation. The ideal growth medium is a mix for epiphytic plants, that contains bark chips for a large part. Water this species regularly in the growth season. In winter, the medium could dry a bit in between waterings. Place Angraecum compactum in bright indirect light, direct sunlight could burn the leaves. Fertilize this orchid with standard orchid fertilizer in the growing season, the recommended strength.
