Aerangis luteoalba var. rhodosticta was discovered at the end of the 19th century in Cameroun and Somalia and described by Kraenzlin as ‘Angraecum rhodostictum’. It is an epiphytic orchid from central Africa where it grows usually on twigs or bush branches around rivers on elevations of 1200-2200m. Plants have 2-8 narrow, green leaves, that can be up to 15 cm long and 1.5 cm wide. Flower stems have 5-25 white flowers which are flat and quite rounded and up to 3-4 cm wide. The flower column is coloured red and adds to the charm of this unique orchid. Flowering occurs through the summer. Aerangis luteoalba var. rhodosticta is a striking orchid to grow and is especially suited for terrarium culture where the extra humidity will be appreciated. Aerangis luteoalba var. rhodosticta grows naturally as an epiphyte on twigs or bush branches at elevations of 1000-2500 m. Medium warm temperatures around 20-30 °C at daytime and 15-20 °C at night are required. Aerangis luteoalba var. rhodosticta is best grown in moderate shade conditions without any direct sunlight. It is suitable for a terrarium where it should be grown towards the top to accommodate for the long hanging flower stems. Mounted on a piece of cork with some sphagnum for extra humidity is the preferable way to grow it. This orchid is also suitable for pot culture in medium sized bark with some sphagnum. Fertilizing every 15 days with a high nitrogen water soluble fertilizer diluted in half the normal concentration during the growing season (mainly mid-spring and summer) is highly beneficial.
