Aerangis kotschyana was discovered by naturalist Dr. Th. Kotschy in 1838 and later described from his herbarium material by Reichenbach f. as ‘Angraecum kotschyanum’ after him. It is an epiphytic orchid from central Africa where it usually grows high on the trees or the larger branches in altitudes up to 1500 m. Plants have thick silvery roots and 3-20 leathery grey-green leaves with characteristic veins that can be 6-20 cm long and 2-8 wide. Flower stems are produced from summer to winter, carrying 10-20, white (sometimes tinged with pink), fragrant, long-spurred flowers that can be up to 5 cm in diameter. Aerangis kotschyana is an adaptable orchid well suited for terrarium or pot culture, and since it usually flowers throughout the season more than once, a beautiful addition to any collection. Aerangis kotschyana grows naturally as an epiphyte high on trees and from sea level to 1500 m making it very adaptable to indoor culture. Medium warm temperatures around 20-30 °C at daytime and 15-20°C at night are required. It should be dry between waterings. Aerangis kotschyana is best grown in moderate bright conditions without any direct sunlight. It is suitable for a terrarium where it should be grown towards the top to accommodate for the long hanging flower stems. This orchid is also suitable for pot culture in large sized bark. Fertilizing every 15 days with a high nitrogen water soluble fertilizer diluted in half the normal concentration during the growing season (mainly mid-spring and summer) is highly beneficial.
