Aerangis biloba was introduced to Europe from Ghana by the nursery of Loddiges in the mid 19th century and described by Lindley as ‘Angraecum bilobum’. It occurs naturally in central east Africa as an epiphyte on a variety of habitats and altitudes up to 700 m. Plants are medium sized miniatures with 4-20 leathery dark green leaves with red hues (especially the young leaves) and blackish dots up to (but rarely) 18 cm long and have thick silvery roots. Flower stems carry 8-20 well presented, white, star shaped flowers with pink hues about 3 cm in diameter, which are fragrant at night. This orchid flowers late spring to summer and usually more than once in the season. Aerangis biloba is an easy to grow orchid suitable for terrarium or pot culture, provided it dries between waterings and has leaves that add contrast all year round. Medium warm temperatures around 20-30 °C at daytime and 15-20 °C at night are required and should be dry between waterings. Aerangis biloba is best grown in medium light conditions without direct sunlight and moderate air humidity. It is suitable for a terrarium where mounted will develop beautiful silvery thick roots. It is also suitable for pot or basket culture using coarse sized bark. Fertilizing every 15 days with a high nitrogen water soluble fertilizer diluted in half the normal concentration during the growing season (mainly mid-spring and summer) is highly beneficial.
