Aerangis articulata comes from Madagascar and the Comoros where it grows epiphytically on trunks of trees from sea level to 2000 m altitude. It was first introduced in cultivation by Reverent Mr. Ellis of Rose Hill in the mid 19th century from Madagascar, and initially described as ‘Angraecum articulatum’ by Reichenbach f. Plants are robust, with green leaves spaced along a thick stem, which are around 8-20 cm long and 3-5 cm wide. Aerial roots are produced along the stem and can be considerably long. Multiple stems grow in time from the base of the plant. Flower stems are hanging under the stems, can be from 20-60 cm long and have up to 24 flowers. The flowers of Aerangis articulata present well spaced on the stem, and are white, star shaped, almost 6 cm wide with a long spur. They are fragrant at night. Flowering occurs from autumn to winter. This is an easy orchid to grow, especially in a pot or a hanging basket. Due to its size, it is only suitable for bigger terraria than usually where it needs good air movement. Because it occupies a wide range of habitats, Aerangis articulata is an easy to grow orchid. Medium temperatures around 20-25 °C at daytime and 15-18 °C at night are required and should be dry between waterings. Aerangis articulata is best grown in shade with moderate air humidity and is suitable for pot or basket culture using coarse sized bark. Due to this orchid’s size, it is only suitable for big terraria but can be grown as a house plant. Fertilizing every 15 days with a high nitrogen water soluble fertilizer diluted in half the normal concentration during the growing season (mainly mid-spring and summer) is highly beneficial. For additional plant information for this special orchid see the Araflora plantcare symbols.
