Aerangis arachnopus is a beautiful orchid from the rainforests of central west Africa where it grows under 1000 m altitude. Little is known about its discovery since it was described as ‘Angraecum arachnopus’ by Reichenbach f. by a plant sent to him from Zurich in the mid 19th century. It has a small rosette of 5-9 thick green leaves up to 15 cm in length which arise from a woody stem covered in thick roots. The flower stem is hanging under the leaves, it is long (can reach 30-60 cm) and has up to 15 flowers which are 4-5 cm wide. The flowers of Aerangis arachnopus are fragrant, star shaped, white with pink edges and have a long spur. Flowering occurs mainly in winter. The plant is easy to grow in a terrarium or a pot and flowers freely. For additional plant information for this special orchid see the Araflora plant symbols.
Aerangis arachnopus is an orchid that likes warm conditions all year with a small drop at night. Around 20-25 °C at day and 18-20 °C at night are perfect for it. Medium light conditions without direct sunlight work great for it. This orchid prefers humid conditions and grows better when watered when it is not quite dry. Aerangis arachnopus can grow easily mounted on a cork in a humid terrarium or in pots filled with medium sized bark or a bark and sphagnum mixture. Fertilizing every 15 days with a high nitrogen water soluble fertilizer diluted in half the normal concentration during the growing season (mainly mid-spring and summer) is highly beneficial.
