Monstera karstenianum - Aroid158

Monstera karstenianum is the old name, in widespread use, of Philodendron opacum, a member of the cheese plant family. In fact it’s a Philodendron and its proper name is Philodendron karstenianum. It comes originally from the Amazon basin in Brazil. It is a rare plant that will appeal to enthusiasts looking for something healthy and resilient. It can be grown in a pot or perhaps even better, as a climber, cascading from a hanging ...

basket. It has strong, deep-green leaves attached individually to the leaf stalk rather than in pairs.

Plant information: Monstera karstenianum

Monstera karstenianum is found in the wild in the northern parts of tropical South America but it is by no means common. It has a fairly long stem which means it can be grown as a hanging plant or as a climber against a cane. The deep green leaves are ridged which gives them a wavy appearance. Monstera karstenianum comes from the same family as the familiar cheese plant but not the same genus as it is a philodendron.

Plant care: Monstera karstenianum

Make sure pets do not try to eat Monstera karstenianum as it is extremely poisonous. It is fairly easy to look after provided it is kept in a moderately bright place away from direct sunlight. For instance, it can be grown in the home in a place where the temperature does not vary much. It is important to keep Monstera karstenianum constantly humid/moist so give it plenty of rainwater or distilled water and mist when necessary. A peat base would be ideal. See the section entitled “Plant Accessories” for more information about all kinds of requisites. When Monstera karstenianum becomes too big, you can prune it with sterilised secateurs.
