The Microsorum siamensis starter fern (syn. Microsorum siamense) was officially described in 2009 and is still relatively unknown in commercial cultivation. This fern is native to the extreme south of Thailand, where it grows on rock faces and in limestone crevices. The starter plant has smaller and thinner leaves than a mature Microsorum siamensis, but already displays the characteristic intense blue iridescent sheen. In its natural environment, the Microsorum siamensis starter fern thrives in high humidity and warm temperatures. It is a compact grower that spreads slowly via thread-like, creeping rhizomes. Under suitable conditions, the leaves of this starter plant develop a glossy, metallic blue color, making this Microsorum siamensis starter fern a beautiful addition to any terrarium or vivarium. For more information about this exotic blue fern, please consult the Araflora product information below.
The Microsorum siamensis starter fern grows best in low to medium light; too much light can turn the leaves greener and reduce the iridescent sheen. For optimal growth, this fern loves high humidity (80% or higher) and warm temperatures. Care must be taken when watering the Microsorum siamensis starter fern: the soil should not dry out completely, but waterlogging must be absolutely avoided to prevent root rot. This fern grows best in an airy substrate with good drainage, preferably with a small percentage of limestone fragments to support the intensity of the leaf color. Fertilization is minimally required, and the plant spreads slowly via thread-like rhizomes. With proper care, the Microsorum siamensis starter fern remains a striking and robust plant that makes a beautiful addition to any terrarium or vivarium. Please note that leaves may occasionally fall off during shipping and acclimatization, which is normal for this starter plant.
