Plant information: Orchid 'Macodes petola' Type X

Macodes petola is native to Southeast Asia, where it grows in lowland rainforests. There, this jewel orchid thrives on the shady forest floor in warm and humid conditions. It is a terrestrial orchid, which means that it grows in the ground rather than on trees, like many other orchid species. Macodes petola has a creeping growth habit and remains compact. In autumn, an upright flower stem appears that can grow to a height of about 20 centimetres. Approximately fifteen small flowers bloom on this stem, with the lip at the top. Although the flowers are graceful, it is the intensely veined leaves that are the main ornamental value of this species. Plant care: Orchid 'Macodes petola' Type X

Macodes petola likes a warm, humid and sheltered location without direct sunlight. Bright sunlight can damage the delicate leaves and cause the striking pattern to fade. A spot in partial shade or in a terrarium is ideal, as this helps maintain humidity levels. The plant requires a constantly moist substrate; it does not tolerate drying out well, but wet feet should also be avoided. An airy, humus-rich mixture that drains well works best. Because Macodes petola has shallow roots and spreads easily sideways, it grows better in a low, wide dish than in a deep pot. Temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius are ideal. With sufficient warmth and humidity, this jewel orchid develops into a lush foliage plant that offers ornamental value all year round. A refined and special addition to any collection.
