Huperzia 'Lycopodium' squarrosum 'XL' - Lyco08a
With its small, green, pointed leaves this plant resembles certain types of waterweed (Elodea). However, Huperzia squarrosum grows on dry land and is found in the wild in Sri Lanka, Java and India. It is a “primitive” plant that is easy to cultivate, preferably in a terrarium or a glasshouse.

Huperzia squarrosum grows down towards the ground rather than upwards. Planting or potting needs to take into account the fact that it can grow to a length of 1 metre. Like other members of the Huperzia family it does not produce flowers. Huperzia squarrosum propagates itself by producing spores between the base of its leaves and their stems.
Huperzia squarrosum thrives in a warm and humid environment. The temperature should not be lower than 15⁰ C or exceed 30⁰ C. The best substrate for Huperzia squarrosum consists of a mixture of peat and sphagnum moss. Plants should be watered when the substrate starts to dry out. Occasional doses of fertiliser will encourage plant growth. Good drainage and circulation of fresh air are essential to prevent the plant rotting or becoming infected. Huperzia pinifolia needs plenty of light but should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Pruning is not advisable.
