Huperzia carinata is best cultivated in a glasshouse or large terrarium. The plant supplied by Araflora will be 10 cm long and 5 cm wide. It will grow slowly to begin with, not upwards but rather down towards the ground, in due course reaching 1 metre. For this reason it is best regarded as a trailing plant and grown in a hanging pot or on a surface high enough from the ground.
Huperzia carinata is easy to cultivate, provided a number of essential requirements are met to ensure the best possible growth. The plant needs to be watered every three days but the growing medium must never become saturated. It is best to add a few pebbles at the bottom of the pot so water can drain away easily. Huperzia carinata needs plenty of light but must not be exposed to direct sunlight or fierce bright light. Plants require a high level of humidity and a temperature between 15⁰ C and 30⁰ C. The best substrate consists of peat or sphagnum moss. A moderate amount of fertiliser will promote the plant’s growth. Good air circulation will protect Huperzia carinata from infection. Pruning is not advisable.
