Huperzia squarrosum (another old name, Lycopodium squarrosum) is a lesser-known species but beloved by terrarium plant enthusiasts due to its compact growth habit and unique appearance. This plant is native to mountainous regions of Southeast Asia and often grows on rocks, in crevices, and in damp forests. The starter plant has smaller branched leaves than a mature Huperzia squarrosum but already displays the characteristic upright structure so typical of this species. In its natural environment, the plant thrives in high humidity and cool to moderate temperatures. It is a slow-growing plant that spreads via underground rhizomes and forms a compact, branched network. Using the Araflora symbols below, you can obtain additional product information about the Huperzia squarrosum (syn. Lycopodium squarrosum).
The Huperzia squarrosum starter plant grows best in low to medium light; bright sunlight can burn the delicate leaves and diminish the natural color. For healthy growth, this plant prefers high humidity (around 80% or higher) and cool to moderate temperatures. Watering the Huperzia squarrosum starter plant must be done carefully: the soil should not dry out completely, but waterlogging must be absolutely avoided to prevent root rot. This plant grows best in an airy substrate that drains well, such as a mix of bark, coconut fiber, and limestone fragments. Fertilization is minimally required, and the plant spreads slowly via its rhizomes. With proper care, the Huperzia squarrosum starter plant remains a striking and robust addition to any terrarium or vivarium. Please note that leaves may sometimes fall off during shipping and acclimatization, which is normal for starter plants. Huperzia squarrosum grows best in a humid and warm environment. Ensure that the temperature in this room does not drop below 15°C or rise above 30°C. You can use a mixture of peat or sphagnum moss as a substrate for the plant to grow in. Re-moisten the substrate when it begins to dry out slightly. You can also fertilize the substrate from time to time. Good air circulation and drainage are important to prevent plant diseases. Keep Huperzia squarrosum out of direct sunlight, but ensure it has a bright location. Pruning is not recommended.
