Homalocladium platycladum - Botho14
Homalocladium platycladum - Botho14
Homalocladium is a bit of an outsider in the plant world, as there is only one species in this plant genus. The plant is indigenous to Papua New Guinea and the Solomons Islands and given this tropical origin it should be clear that Homalocladium is not hardy. Because of the bizarre growth of the branches, this plant is called ribbon bush or tapeworm plant.

The stems of Homalocladium the Ribbon bush or tapeworm plant have widened and taken over the function of the leaf. Leaves are rare and unremarkable. The flowers are not spectacular either, but the fact that they appear on the sides of the "leaf", the widened branches, is special and a bit bizarre. The plant is green all year round; the young shoots that are easily formed are bright green.
Homalocladium prefers a not too warm, but a light place. It fits perfectly in a greenhouse that is kept frost-free. It can survive temperatures up to 10 °C. Place outdoors in the summer in the full sun. Let the soil dry regularly. It's natural habitat is relatively dry place. If the plant grows too large, it can be repotted. Use a soil mixture that is not too rich.
