Geogenanthus ciliatus grows in the tropical forests of South America, exclusively on the forest floor. It is closely related to the popular houseplant Tradescantia. The plant has a relatively short stem, with one or sometimes two terminal leaves. The leaves are almost completely round and very dark, sometimes nearly black with a blue sheen. The leaf surface is highly glossy, while the underside is lightly hairy and purple in color. Occasionally, the plant may bloom, producing blue to purple flowers with three petals, typical of this plant family. The easiest way to propagate this plant is through cuttings: take a cutting just below the leaf and root it in seed or cutting soil.
In nature, Geogenanthus ciliatus grows in humid, shaded conditions. It prefers cooler temperatures between 14–25°C and a humidity level of at least 70%. The plant requires low light, so a shady location is sufficient. Avoid exposing the leaves to direct sunlight, as this can burn them. Plant in a humus-rich soil mix with good drainage. The soil should never completely dry out. Water frequently, but avoid waterlogging. Fertilize monthly during active growth with a standard green plant fertilizer, diluted to ¼ of the recommended dosage.
