This remarkable orchid originates from Yunnan, Sikkim, Assam, and parts of Myanmar, where it grows on trees in lowland forests with a moderate to cool climate. The plant is also known as Rothschild’s Bulbophyllum, named after the famous English banking family Rothschild, who were passionate orchid enthusiasts. In the 19th century, imported orchids were rare, exotic, and highly valued across Europe. The Rothschilds played an important role in the early European orchid cultivation due to their knowledge and passion. Flowers and Features
The flowers of Bulbophyllum rothschildianum immediately catch the eye. The top sepal is covered with tiny hairs that move even with the slightest breeze. The two side petals wrap forward, giving the flower its characteristic skirt-like shape. Upon closer inspection, the petals are decorated with sparkling granules resembling tiny beads. The brightly colored lip, typical of many Bulbophyllums, adds extra charm to the flower.
Bulbophyllum rothschildianum thrives in low light but produces more flowers under moderate to bright indirect light. Araflora recommends using well-draining, moist soil, especially during the active growth period from late spring to the end of summer. Avoid waterlogged soil to prevent root rot. In summer, this orchid prefers daytime temperatures around 26°C and nighttime temperatures of 19–20°C. In winter, optimal daytime temperatures range from 18–20°C, with night temperatures of 5–7°C. Bulbophyllum rothschildianum enjoys high humidity, preferably above 60%, and a well-ventilated space. Repotting after flowering is recommended if necessary.During summer Bulbophyllum rothschildianum likes a day temperature around 26°C and during the night the optimum temperature should be around 19°C to 20 °C. During winter time the optimum day temperature is around 18°C to 20°C and the night temperature can be around 5°C to 7°C. Bulbophyllum rothschildianum likes a humidity level of above 60%.
