Within the bromeliad family, Alcantarea odorata is considered one of the bigger species. Endemic to Brazil, this plant measures one and a half meters in diameter when mature. Unlike other species within this genus, the rosette is more upright orientated when exposed to adequate light conditions and could contain many liters of water. The leaves have a silvery wash, most probably to protect itself from harsh sunlight. After several years this plant could produce a two-meter-tall green inflorescence. Flowers are bright yellow and produce a sweet fragrance. This plant is mostly propagated by young offshoots near the base of the plant.
Alcantarea odorata originated from different environments and several climatic conditions. This plant is therefore adaptable to many growing conditions. Ideally place this species in a warm space with minimum temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius. Under bright light this plant is able to sustain the silvery colored leaves most optimally, so a southern facing window or greenhouse is best. From spring to early autumn, it is possible to grow this plant in the garden. Water this bromeliad directly in the rosette and make sure there is always water in between the leaves. The root system of this plant functions mostly for anchorage and requires coarse, excellent draining soil. Fertilize this plant with orchid fertilizer according to description
