Utricularia quelchii is found in nature in humid places. The plant can grow upon other plants and trees, as well as on the ground and on rocks in the swamp. This humidity is needed for this species to catch its prey with the bladders at the base of its leaves. The leaves are shaped like a round spoon. In Venezuela and Guyana, where Utricularia quelchii can be found, the bromeliad Brocchinia also grows. In the puddles in between the foliage it resides, searching for new bromeliads with its long shoots.
Utricularia quelchii is quite easy to take care of in a terrarium or on the windowsill. You can also keep it in a hanging basket or attached to a piece of bark. The temperature of its surroundings should be around 25⁰C with a humidity of 80%. Utricularia quelchii likes light, but beware of direct sunlight. A mixture of peat moss and perlite or pumice will serve as a nice substrate, as it can store moisture while letting any excess water drain from it. Don't let the substrate dry. Water it often using a lot of mineral poor water.
