Biophytum sensitivum is a unique, herbaceous plant native to the tropical regions of Asia and Africa. Belonging to the Oxalidaceae family, it is known for its delicate appearance and fascinating behavior: its leaves slowly fold together at night or when touched — a movement reminiscent of the well-known Mimosa plant. Within the Biophytum genus, there are various species and cultivars that have traditionally been used as medicinal plants. In some cultures, they are applied for wound care, due to their believed antibacterial and healing properties. Habitat and Placement Biophytum sensitivum naturally grows in humid, tropical environments, making it an ideal candidate for terrariums. The cultivar Biophytum x Snowman thrives in a well-ventilated terrarium or a bright windowsill, provided the light and humidity levels are well balanced. This plant prefers bright but indirect sunlight. Too much direct sun can cause leaf deformation, while too little light will significantly slow down its growth. The best locations are east- or west-facing windows. A north-facing window is possible, but there is a greater risk of insufficient light and slower development.
Biophytum sensitivum, a true tropical plant, thrives best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct midday sun, as it can damage the leaves. The ideal temperature in summer is between 25 and 29°C (77–84°F). In winter, the temperature should always remain above 16°C (61°F). During the warmer months, this tropical plant needs regular watering. Make sure the soil stays lightly moist at all times, but avoid waterlogging. It's best to use lukewarm to warm water. Wrinkled leaves are a sign of too little water, while yellowing leaves indicate too much water. High humidity is essential, making this plant perfect for use in a terrarium. Regular misting helps maintain the right humidity level around the plant. Biophytum sensitivum grows best in well-draining, fertile potting soil. For optimal growth, fertilize every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing season — from spring to autumn — using a water-soluble plant fertilizer at half strength.
