As the smallest species in the large Begonia family, Begonia prismatocarpa ‘Starter Plug’ reaches a mature height of only 4–5 cm. Its slow growth makes it even more suitable for tropical terrariums or plant displays. The name Prismatocarpa refers to the prism-shaped fruit of the plant. Originally from West Africa (Ivory Coast, Cameroon, and the island of Bioko), this African Begonia grows naturally in rainforests along streams and rivers, at altitudes between 400 and 1250 meters.
The Begonia prismatocarpa ‘Starter Plug’ loves warmth and high humidity. Unlike many other Begonias, this species can store water in its caudex and thick stems, so the soil can be allowed to dry out slightly between waterings — making it an easy-care tropical Begonia for terrariums and indoor collections.
