Plant information: Begonia cubensis 'Starter'

Begonia cubensis is a tropical plant originating from Cuba, as the name already suggests. This plant is locally known as ‘Cuban holly’. The species is characterized by its sideways stalked, droplet shaped leaves, as with most begonias. The base coloration of the slight hairy leaves is grey to green. When the leaves are developing, they show a burgundy to faint red color, especially when grown in bright light conditions. When mature, it could form a small bush that grows up to a meter in height. From there, this plant could spread horizontally thereafter. The plant produces bright white flowers with a yellow center, that are either male or female. Propagation is easiest by taking cutting of larger stems. When both sexes of flowers are present, it could be propagated by seed as well.

Plant care: Begonia cubensis 'Starter'

Begonia cubensis is a relatively easy plant to grow that could also be kept outside in summer. This species grows best in temperatures between 16 and 30 degrees Celsius. Humidity should be as high as 60%, preferably. Also allow for enough ventilation. Indoors, place Begonia cubensis in front of an eastern or western facing window. Outside, give it a shady spot. Place this plant in a humus rich soil that could retain water. It is important not to let the soil dry out completely. Water this plant frequently but prevent the soil from becoming soggy. Fertilize this species with standard plant nutrients for green plants, the recommended dose on a monthly basis.
