Virtually every aspect of the Barringtonia asiatica is impressive. The leaves can grow up to half a meter long and 30 cm wide and have a leathery texture with a deep sheen. New foliage emerges in warm orange to reddish hues, which contrast beautifully with the mature dark green. In the wild, the tree develops large, square seeds—often called "starter pods"—that are dispersed by the sea and can grow into new trees on the coast. In a terrarium or greenhouse culture, the plant remains compact but retains its powerful, tropical appearance. Background Information: In the wild, Barringtonia asiatica grows along coasts, rivers, and mangrove forests, often with its roots in water. The species has a high water requirement and can even be temporarily submerged. Thanks to its robust structure and adaptability, it can withstand varying conditions. When the plant forms new leaves, they have a beautiful orange to red color, which contrasts beautifully with the surrounding environment and is highly decorative. Under very hot conditions Barringtonia asiatica should be submerged in water due to its high water requirements; a slightly moist soil is the norm for this species. The Barringtonia asiatica is ideal as a terrarium plant because this mangrove is exceptionally hardy, grows well, and has few environmental demands. In prolonged temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius, the plant may lose its leaves, but they will regrow as soon as temperatures rise. Barringtonia Care
- Water: Keep the soil moist to wet. The plant tolerates temporary submersion, but avoid stagnant water.
- Light: Plenty of bright, indirect light; partial shade is ideal. - Temperature: Heat-loving (22–32°C). Below 20°C, temporary leaf loss may occur.
- Humidity: High (60–90%), similar to tropical rainforests. - Substrate: Airy, moisture-retaining mixture of coconut fiber, sand, and peat. - Feeding: Light plant food once every 2–4 weeks during the growth period.
Tip: The plant's roots can be submerged in water—this encourages strong root growth, similar to the natural tidal environment of a mangrove. For more information about this Araflora plant, see the care symbols below.
