Barringtonia asiatica - Botho270
Barringtonia asiatica - Botho270
The Barringtonia asiatica is an impressive, large mangrove tree, commonly known as the "Sea Poison Tree" due to an extract from its bark and seeds being used to stun fish, making them easy to catch when they float to the surface. Virtually every aspect of this mangrove is large; its leaves can reach lengths of nearly half a meter and widths of up to 30 centimeters.

When the plant forms new leaves, they exhibit a beautiful orange to red hue, which contrasts nicely with the rest of the environment and is highly decorative.
Barringtonia asiatica is particularly well-suited as a terrarium plant (not to be kept with herbivorous or omnivorous animals) since this mangrove is exceptionally robust, grows well, and demands little from its environment. Prolonged temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius may cause the plant to lose its leaves, but these will regrow once temperatures rise. In very hot conditions, Barringtonia asiatica may become submerged in water due to its significant water requirements; slightly moist soil is the norm for this species.
