Ananas nanus variegated Red - Brom305
Ananas nanus variegated Red - Brom305
The dwarf pineapple is a relative of the familiar pineapple grown commercially for its fruit. However, the fruit of Ananas nanus is neither as large nor as juicy, although the tiny pineapples are edible once fully ripe. Ananas nanus is an attractive variety, best described as a small, ornamental houseplant. Like other pineapple species it is a member of the Bromeliad family and comes originally from Brazil and Surinam.

This plant forms a rosette that can be up to 60 centimeters in diameter. Long, firm leaves growing out of the rosette range in colour from yellowish green to dark green. They are edged with sharp spikes, so they need to be handled with care. Under the right conditions, the plant forms a flower stem in the center of its rosette. This then bears an inflorescence of pretty, elliptical white flowers with purple tips. Once the flowers have faded, the plant produces a miniature pineapple the size of a hen’s egg, initially red, turning golden yellow as it ripens.
Ananas nanus originates in the tropics so not surprisingly it enjoys a high level of humidity. Use well draining soil to get the best results. In spring and summer, it needs regular watering. In between watering, the soil should be allowed to dry out almost completely. If the soil is too wet, the plant’s roots will rot. In autumn and winter, it requires less water. Ananas nanus is best cultivated at room temperature. It loves plenty of light, but must not be exposed to direct sunlight for too long during the summer. Don’t use too much fertilizer, as it will result in the plant flowering more slowly.
