Plant information: Aeschynanthus humilis

Aeschynanthus humilis belongs to the Gesneriaceae family, the same plant family as the closely related Columnea genus. In the wild, this plant is found in the humid forests of Asia, from the foothills of the Himalayas to deep within Indonesia. Like most of its relatives, this plant is an epiphyte: it naturally grows on trees, not as a parasite, but using them for support and elevation to reach better light conditions. Appearance and Growth Unlike many other Aeschynanthus species, humilis does not have fleshy leaves. Instead, its leaves are thin and soft, indicating a preference for a relatively constant level of humidity. The plant remains relatively small and grows upright, making it well-suited for smaller spaces or structured plant displays. Like other members of the genus, its flowers attract birds—especially native nectar feeders—which often act as pollinators in the wild. Aeschynanthus naturally occurs in the humid forests of Asia—from the Himalayas to Indonesia—and like most other Aeschynanthus species, humilis grows epiphytically on trees. Birds frequently play a key role in its pollination. The Araflora symbols below will give you some indications for this plant. We are working hard on adding valuable information as soon as possible.

Plant care: Aeschynanthus humilis

Caring for Aeschynanthus humilis requires some experience and attention. It is not a beginner’s plant, but with the right care, you can enjoy this elegant epiphyte for many years. Light and Temperature This plant thrives in warmth and plenty of light but should be kept out of direct sunlight. Since it naturally grows under the canopy of tropical trees, filtered light is ideal. In our homes, this often means supplementing with artificial light to provide sufficient warmth and light intensity, especially during the winter months. Watering and Humidity Although this plant is an epiphyte and should never be left sitting in water, it does require regular watering. The soil should remain lightly moist, but never soggy. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Maintaining a good level of humidity—such as that found in a terrarium or greenhouse—helps prevent leaf issues. Substrate Use a light and well-draining substrate, such as a mix of sphagnum moss and tree fern fiber. This mimics its natural environment, where the roots hang freely and dry quickly between rainfalls. The plantcare symbols below will give you an indication about the product.
