Product info

Zygopetalum microphytum is a small epiphytic orchid from the southeastern of Brazil. This species forms egg-shaped pseudobulbs, carrying multiple upstanding, lanceolate leaves that are bright green in color. This plant could produce flowers year-round. From the base of the plant, an up to 25 cm long inflorescence is formed alongside the pseudobulb. The inflorescence is carrying multiple, diversely colored flowers that are approximately 2.5 cm. Every tepal is, with exception of the labellum, yellow as base color, decorated with a haphazard pattern of darker stains. The labellum of this orchid is bright white, or in some cases up to faint purple. The flowers produce a pleasant smell. This species is propagated by dividing mature plants. Make sure that every section contains a plant with at least one mature pseudobulb.

Plant care

Zygopetalum microphytum occurs naturally on branches of trees in subtropical forests. Provide temperatures between 12 and 25 degrees Celsius. At night, the temperature could drop a couple of degrees compared to daytime temperatures. Grow this species in a high humidity environment of at least 70%. A higher relative humidity, especially at night, is recommended. Place this plant in an airy mixture for epiphytes that contains bark chips and sphagnum moss as main elements. Never allow the soil mixture to go dry in summer, in between waterings. This species favors semi-shaded conditions. Direct sunlight is endured poorly as this will burn the leaves. Fertilize this species weekly with specialized orchid fertilizer, 1 /4 the recommended strength.
