Orchid 'Polystachya pubescens'

Polystachya pubescens is a small species from the orchid family. This sympodial orchid forms multiple elliptical, erect pseudobulbs. From each pseudobulb, two to three leathery, lancet-shaped leaves are formed that show a deep running vein. In between the leaves, when the pseudobulb is mature an erect inflorescence could arise. The species flowers from early autumn to winter. The lightly hairy inflorescence reaches around 25 centimeter in length and carries up to eight flowers. Flowers are yellow to golden and show a remarkable, horizontal, red to orange striation on the upper tepals. The flowers produce a pleasant honey-like scent.

Polystachya pubescens grows naturally in South Africa on elevations of 1500 meters. The species grows on exposed rocky outcrops as epiphyte or sometimes as lithophyte. It is an easy to grow species for cool greenhouses, outside or in the living room. Make sure the temperature stays between 12 and 3 degrees Celsius. This species is not severely affected by low humidity. Allow for excellent ventilation. This orchid requires bright indirect light; try to avoid direct mid-day sun. Pot the plant in an airy mix for epiphytes. In between waterings it is possible to let the soil dry out a bit. Fertilize weekly with specialized orchid fertilizer, half the recommended dosage.
