Product info

Geogenanthus ciliatus originates from damp forests of Southern America. It only grows at the forest floor. This species is closely related to the better-known genus and common houseplant Tradescantia. The plant consists of a stout stem with one or sometimes two terminal leaves. The leaves of this plant are almost round and have an extraordinarily dark coloration. In some conditions, the color of the glossy leaves are almost black with a faint blue shine. The lower surface of the leaves are slightly hairy and purple. In some cases it is possible for this plant to produce flowers. Flowers have a purple to blue color and, similar to other species within this family, have three petals. Propagation is most easy by cuttings. Cut the main stem with one or two leaves and place this in water or soil to root.

Plant care

Geogenanthus ciliatus grows naturally in damp and shady conditions. It is a cool growing plant with optimal temperatures in between 14 and 25 degrees Celsius. Provide a humidity of at least 70%. Light conditions do not need to be very bright for this species, a shaded environment is sufficient. Prevent direct sunlight reaching the leaves, this could cause the leaves to burn. Place this plant in humus rich, well-draining soil. The soil is not allowed to dry out completely so water the plant frequently but prevent the soil from becoming soggy. For this plant it is possible to apply fertilizer monthly, dilute to 1/4 the recommended strength.
