Product info

Begonia hemsleyana ‘Variagata’ is a rare subtropical plant from the Yunnan, China. This plant grows up to about half a meter and stands out because of its extraordinary leaves. These are palmate and consist of a maximum of eight leaflets. Leaflets are elongated, ovoid and have a serrated leaf margin. The main color of the leaves is dark green with a bright silver spotted pattern. The underside of the leaves are red to purple. Leaves are carried by a red, hairy petiole which grows from a rhizome below ground. When mature, the plant produces pink flowers with a yellow center, that are either male or female. Propagation is easiest by taking cutting of larger stems or leaves. When both sexes of flowers are present, it could be propagated by seed as well.

Plant care

Begonia hemsleyana ‘Variagata’ grows naturally in shaded spots on cool and humid forest floors. This species requires temperatures between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius. Humidity should be generally high but allow for good ventilation. Begonia hemsleyana ‘Variagata’ does not demand much light, artificial lighting or a shaded spot suffices. When mature, it is possibly needed to support this plant in its growth. Place the species in a humus rich soil that could retain water. Water this plant frequently but let the soil dry out a little between waterings. Prevent the soil from becoming soggy. When exposed to lower temperatures within its range, it could happen that this plant drops its leaves and goes dormant. In the growing season, leaves will sprout again from its rhizome. Fertilize this species with standard plant nutrients for green plants, 1/4 the recommended dose on a monthly basis.
