Specifications
Hoya imbricata

Hoya imbricata is a spectacular tropical plant with a unique climbing growth habit. When the plant finds a proper structure to climb on the leaves will fold around it. If there is no structure, the leaves will fold around itself and create a tube-like leaf. Besides this spectacular growth habit, this plant will flower with beautiful umbels of fragrant flowers with the right care. This Hoya is a must-have for every Hoya enthousiast or terrarium owner.

Product info

The species name ‘Hoya imbricata’ translates to ‘overlapping Hoya’. This name refers to the peculiar growth habit of shingling leaves. This growth form enables a symbiosis with ants. The plant provides shelter under its shingled leaves, and in return the ants fertilise the plant with their waste (frass). The ants also protect the plant from herbivores by attacking anything disturbing the plant. You do not have to worry about an ant invasion when keeping this plant in your house or terrarium. The plant does not require the ants to thrive and they will not attract ants unless you grow it outside. This species is found throughout south-east Asia and grows epiphytically on lowland rainforest trees. Although the spectacular growth habit and the beautifully camouflaged leaves are enough to make this a very desirable plant, it can also flower with the proper care. The flowers grow in umbells on a perennial stalk called a peduncle. The flowers are beautifully scented and will last a couple of days.

Plant care

With the proper care this Hoya can be a very easy-to-grow plant. It will require a bit more than regular household conditions to thrive. Humidity ideally is above 60% (preferably around 80%) and temperatures ranging between 22C and 35C. In these conditions the plants can grow at quite a pace. This plant is perfect for a terrarium, but can also be grown under a glass dome or an indoor greenhouse or grow tent. Compared to other Hoyas this species can take a lot of light, and will actually require some direct sunlight (or strong artificial light) to flower. Due to the odd growth habit, this exotic Hoya can best be grown on a mount, but it can also be grown as a crawling or hanging plant. If grown on a mount, it is best to wrap the roots around the mount with some sphagnum. You can also grow this species in soil, but you should use a very well-draining mixture of perlite, orchid bark and a little bit of peat.
