Specifications
Amorphophallus kiushianus “S”

The so-called "penis plants" are known for their beautiful, somewhat special-looking flowers. Amorphophallus kiushianus is certainly one of the most beautiful among these remarkable plants. The flower of the voodoo lily, which can grow to be almost half a meter, has an apple-green color with cream-colored spots. The flowering spike that protrudes high above the flower of the Amorphophallus kiushianus, is not light, but dark colored.

Product info

Amorphophallus kiushianus occurs naturally in the temperate regions of Japan, China and Taiwan. This makes it relatively easier to keep the plant in Europe than related species. These voodoo lilies also have a manageable size that can later grow to a maximum of one meter. Amorphophallus kiushianus grows in periods through an underground tuber. Some years the plant grows by creating a leaf that it loses again at the end of the season. The impressive flower is produced after a number of cycles. This spreads a scent of decaying meat, to attract flies and other insects. Amorphophallus kiushianus produces orange-red berries after flowering, even if the plant is not pollinated.

Plant care

Amorphophallus kiushianus, unlike other tropical species, comes from a temperate climate. This means that the voodoo lily can be planted in the ground at your home in the summer. It is important that the temperature doesn’t fall below 10°C. If low temperatures are predicted, it is better to move the plant back to a warmer location. Amorphophallus kiushianus prefers a light to semi-light location. The root tuber must not be constantly wet. This can lead to rotting. When the plant is in its resting period, it is preferable to keep the soil slightly moist. If you keep the plant in a pot it is good to use bark to ensure that water doesn’t accumulate. A substrate of stones is less ideal for this, because the roots of Amorphophallus kiushianus cannot root in it. The voodoo lily has no special need for specific minerals in the soil. You can therefore also give normal plant food to promote growth if you think it is necessary.
