Specifications
Amorphophallus hewitti “S”
Like many other species, the tropical species Amorphophallus hewitti comes from the Indonesian island of Borneo. However, there are few species that can flower so spectacularly. The flowers of older specimens can grow to almost a meter and a half. Amorphophallus hewitti has the shape of a tree, but consists of only one leaf. This leaf is beautifully branched and fairly sturdy.

Product info

In addition to Borneo, the Amorphophallus hewitti, can be found on the mainland of Malaysia. The species grows there in jungles with a humus-like and calcareous soil. This relative to the Arum grows with a vegetative and flowering phase. Amorphophallus hewitti will first collect nutrients to strengthen its underground tuber. When the tuber has become strong enough, a single but huge flower will appear. This flower has a green and dark purple (almost black) color. A long cream-colored flowering spike protrudes from this. The fruits of Amorphophallus hewitti are round and have a striking orange-red color.

Plant care

Because of its tropical origin, Amorphophallus hewitti needs a temperature of around 25°C with an absolute minimum of 20°C. The plant thrives well on moderately moist soil. It is wise to allow the upper layer of the earth to dry slightly before watering again. The plant needs water once a month during the resting phase. However, make sure that the tuber does not dry out completely, as this can be fatal to the plant. A high humidity and a place in the partial shade best mimics the natural environment of Amorphophallus hewitti. It is essential to ensure proper drainage. For this you can use the best bark as opposed to stones, because the plant is better rooted therein. You can give Amorphophallus hewitti plant food to promote growth. Choose a lime-rich mix for this.
